A taste of the decoder

How the government says it. How we say it.

Medicare isn't hard because you're bad at this. It's hard because it's written for auditors, not for you. Translation is the whole product.

Part C: Medicare Advantage plans offered by Medicare-approved private companies under capitated arrangements

Private insurance that replaces Original Medicare. Cheaper per month, but you play by the network's rules.

Income-Related Monthly Adjustment Amount (IRMAA) determined by modified adjusted gross income from two years prior

Earned over $109,000 two years ago? You pay a higher Part B premium. Yes, they check your old tax returns.

Late enrollment penalty pursuant to §1839(b), a 10 percent increase for each full 12-month period of delayed enrollment

Sign up late without an excuse Medicare accepts, and your premium goes up 10% per year missed. Forever.

The real decision

Forget the alphabet soup. You're choosing between two paths.

Parts A, B, C, D, Medigap plans G and N, HMOs, PPOs. Underneath all of it, there is one fork in the road. Everything else follows from which side you take.

Path one

Original Medicare + Medigap

$340–$460 /month, all-in (2026)

Part B premium ($202.90) + Medigap plan + Part D drug plan

  • See any doctor in the country who takes Medicare. No networks, no referrals.
  • Predictable costs. Medigap picks up most of what Medicare doesn't.
  • Higher fixed monthly cost, whether you use care or not.
  • No dental, vision, or hearing coverage built in.

Best for: people who want to keep specific doctors, travel, or hate surprises.

Path two

Medicare Advantage

$203–$255 /month + copays as you go (2026)

Part B premium ($202.90) + plan premium, often $0–$50

  • Low monthly cost. Drug coverage usually included, often dental and vision too.
  • One card, one plan, a yearly cap on in-network out-of-pocket costs.
  • Networks. Your doctor is either in the plan or you're paying full price.
  • Prior authorization: the plan can require approval before covering some care.

Best for: healthy people on a budget who stay local and don't mind networks.

One more thing brokers rarely mention: switching from Advantage back to Medigap later usually means passing medical underwriting. In most states, the door you pick at 65 matters more than it looks.

How the decoder works

Nine questions in. One clear answer out.

Tell us about you

Your timing, your doctors, your medications, your budget, your travel. Nine plain questions, about three minutes. No name, no email, no phone number.

We run the rules

Your answers go through the actual Medicare rules: enrollment windows, penalty math, Medigap underwriting rights in your state, the 2026 costs. All of it runs in your browser. Our server never sees a thing.

Get your path

A recommended path with the reasoning spelled out, a realistic monthly cost range, your deadlines, and the three questions to ask any broker before you sign anything.

The part most sites hide

Here's exactly how we make money.

Most "free Medicare help" is a broker's lead form wearing a trench coat. We'd rather tell you how the sausage gets made.

  • The decoder is free, forever, with no signup. That's not a trial. It's the product.
  • If your results make you want a licensed broker, we'll offer a handoff. Some brokers pay us a referral fee when someone enrolls. That fee is the business model.
  • The recommendation engine doesn't know which answer pays us more. It runs entirely on your device and we literally cannot see it. Skip the broker and we make nothing. Plenty of people do.
  • We are not an insurance company, not a broker, and not affiliated with the government. We're a publisher. We sell clarity and, occasionally, an introduction.

Straight answers

The questions everyone asks

Is Medicare Advantage better than Original Medicare?

Neither is better for everyone, and anyone who says otherwise is selling something. Advantage usually wins on monthly cost; Original plus Medigap wins on freedom and predictability. It comes down to your doctors, your health, your budget, and how much you travel. Which is what the decoder actually weighs.

What does Medicare cost per month in 2026?

Nearly everyone pays $202.90 a month for Part B in 2026. Original Medicare users typically add a Medigap plan (roughly $100 to $250 depending on your state and age) and a drug plan ($0 to $50), landing around $340 to $460 all-in. Advantage plans often add just $0 to $50 in premium, but you pay copays as you use care, up to a yearly in-network cap. Higher earners (over $109,000 single / $218,000 joint, from your tax return two years back) pay a Part B surcharge on top.

When do I need to sign up?

Your window is 7 months long: the 3 months before your 65th birthday month, that month, and the 3 after. Miss it without qualifying coverage and Part B costs 10% more for every 12 months you were late, for the rest of your life. Already covered through a larger employer? Different rules, and usually good news. The decoder handles that case.

I'm still working at 65. Do I need this yet?

If your employer has 20 or more employees, you can usually delay Part B penalty-free and enroll later through a Special Enrollment Period when that coverage ends. Under 20 employees, Medicare becomes primary at 65 whether you enroll or not, so sign up on time. Many people enroll in Part A either way since it's premium-free for most.

Is this really free? What's the catch?

Free, no account, no catch you can't see coming. We earn referral fees if you choose to talk to a broker after your results and end up enrolling. The full arrangement is spelled out two sections up and on our About page. You can use the decoder and walk away without us ever knowing you were here.
